Wood Selections
At DK's Wooden Expression we feel it is very important to tell our customers a little about the particular woods selected for their project. We feel our customers will more fully appreciate a particular wood turning when they understand a little about the features of the wood used in their item (ie. where it comes from, availability, range of colors, types of grain patterns, hardness).
Trees are a valuable natural resource and play a critical role in the ecological vitality of our environement. At DK's Wooden Expressions we make every effort to use our wood resources wisely. We use a wide variety of woods in our workshop. Exotic hardwoods are used in some instances because of their rich textures, coloring, and grain patterns. However, since many of these hardwoods are found only in limited quantity, we try to limit their use to smaller projects such as pens, wine stoppers, and small vases or bowls.

For the most part, the woods used in our larger projects such as bowls and platters are from downed trees in the local community. Every day trees are cut down and removed in our area for a variety of reasons ranging from disease, over growth, and land development, to natural disasters such as wind and fire. Many of these trees are destined for landfills, mulch piles, or firewood. By carefully selecting out some of these woods with excellent color and grain patterns for our turnings we can recycle the wood into wonderful pieces of art that can be treasured and admired for many more years to come.
